Welcome to Fylde Liberal Democrats
|
Fri 5th Feb 2010
The local Liberal Democrat year started with County Councillor (and Fylde LibDem Parliamentary Candidate) Bill Winlow challenging the ruling Conservative Group on Lancashire CC over plans to diminish the role of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee which would further diminish democratic accountability. As the 'big freeze' continued he praised the work of the gritting teams & the community spirit but was critical of some Council decisions on priorities such as not refilling gritting bins in villages. Bill also succeeded in getting a months delay on the decision to close the St. Annes waste recycling centre. Lib Dem County Councillor & Fylde Borough Councillor Howard Henshaw has also opposed this closure. The ongoing fight is being led by Liberal Democrat Fylde Borough Councillor Tony Ford. Howard has also been active on the County Council in opposing the Canatxx gas storage proposals. As Mayor of St Anne's Tony was delighted to take possession of the keys to an office for the Town Council & welcome the appointment of Dave Joy as Town Planner. Please go to individual sites at the left side of this page for much more information.

Liberal Democrat Phil Knowles took the Great Bowden & Arden Ward of [Market] Harborough District Council from the Conservatives. He gained 61.8% of the vote in a straight Tory/LibDem contest. Phil is seen here celebrating. In the only other principal by-election on 28th January we held the seat in Lyngford Ward of Taunton Deane BC. What a great start to the year!

There were just two important by-elections on 21st January. In the Airedale & Ferry Fryston Ward of Wakefield MBC Labour held on to the seat but LibDem Paul Kirby came second increasing his vote by 8.3%. The big news (but not perhaps very good news) was the Conservative pushed into 4th place by the BNP. In West Hallam & Dale Abbey Ward of Erewash BC LibDem Gary Hamson took 37.6% of the vote to come second to the Conservatives who held the seat. The big news here was that LibDems did not contest the seat at the main local council elections so this result was from a standing start.

"I hate to say it, but only one party leader seems to have grasped that, if you construct a system where unskilled people are worse off by taking a job than by staying on welfare, they remain trapped in poverty - and that is Nick Clegg. "
Lord Norman Tebbit
Daily Telegraph online - 13 Jan
"It's unbelievable that the Tories are still planning to cut taxes for a handful of millionaires when the majority of people across the country are feeling the squeeze. We need fair tax cuts that put money back in the pockets of ordinary people. The Tory sums simply do not stack up. It is irresponsible and highly misleading for George Osborne to continue to pretend that they do. "
Vince Cable MP
